Coaching
For you know that we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his own children, encouraging, comforting, and urging you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into his kingdom and glory. 1 Thess 2:11-12
Coaching is a way of “walking alongside” someone to help them accomplish the work to which God has called them. Through a process of curious listening and asking “powerful questions,” coaches assist leaders to find effective solutions and appropriate strategies in developing an action plan. Coaching assists the coachee to determine: Where am I? Where am I going? How will I get there?
Our coaching process is offered in partnership with CoachNet, an organization committed to developing quality coaches in the church with materials developed by Bob Logan and Sherilyn Carlton.
The ELCA is utilizing coaching in a variety of arenas within individual programs, congregations, and synods. The Congregational and Synodical Mission of the ELCA provides periodic training for coaches in basic coaching (Coaching 101) and specialty coaching (coaching congregations through Natural Church Development; coaching mission developers or redevelopers; coaching stewardship teams, evangelism teams, revivalists, etc.) Coaches may pursue ELCA certification through working with a trained assigned mentor to develop coaching excellence.
Interested ELCA leaders or congregations may contact their Director for Evangelical Mission for additional information about what is being offered in their synod.
