Mission Builders: Adding That Little ‘Something Else’ to Life

Rich and Chris Byrne first volunteered with Mission Builders in 2006. They helped add a large addition to a more-than 100-year-old limestone church building for Rushford Lutheran, Rushford, Minnesota.

Then, in 2007, the Brynes helped build a “replacement” facility for Bethany Lutheran in Nevis, Minnesota, for a more-than 100-year-old wooden structure with foundation issues.

From February through May 2008, the Brynes assisted in the complete, or “turn-key,” construction of a combination parsonage/ministry center for the Iglesia Luterana San Lucas (St. Luke) in Eagle Pass, Texas. “This project was a first for Mission Builders,” said Chris. “We had the opportunity to experience a different culture and practice patience as we communicated across a language barrier while receiving and sharing God's love.”

Rich added, “This project also was unique in that we got to do the detailed finish work that isn't usually part of the Mission Builders' portion of a build.”

The Brynes' most recent project was in Duluth, Minnesota, for a “first unit” for the Waters of Life Luthera Lutheran mission congregation.

“Month by month, we could see the congregation grow and mature as the church structure rose,” said Chris. “There was so much excitement in this brand new ELCA congregation as everyone pulled together to build for God's glory.”

“Sharing daily devotions, working together, and living in close proximity on a project builds lasting friendships,” said Chris.

The Brynes keep in touch via e-mail, and visit Mission Builders along the way when they travel to and from projects or are sightseeing around the country.

“God has been so good to us that it is time to give back to the mission of the church,” said Rich. “Through Mission Builders, we serve God and make great friends. The more we give, the more we receive.”
