Glory Lutheran Church, a Mandarin Chinese ministry recently developed by Pastor Newman Chiu, is the second mission congregation to take up residence at First Lutheran Church, Torrance, California. The first is a Japanese ministry begun at First Lutheran ten years ago.

“First Lutheran Church has a Kingdom heart for being so open,” said Chiu. “Not having to worry about paying for space has made things so much easier.”

Chiu now can focus upon discipleship-training and outreach to the local community, particularly to students attending California State University. “The young are the missing link in our churches,” he said.

He suggests that potential Mission Partners provide face-to-face encouragement and prayer. Good communication also is important, especially at First Lutheran, where three worshiping communities now share the same property. Chiu recommends that a Mission Partner “really know what a mission congregation needs. Ask, 'What can I do for you?' and be ready for a list!”

Chiu felt touched when the bishop and director for evangelical mission of the Southwest California Synod signed their names to help open Glory's checking account and appreciates the larger ELCA's support and encouragement. Chiu also is thankful for the personal support of an ecumenical group—the Center for Chinese Ministry.
