We are the African Descent Lutheran Association. Welcome to our Webpage!

The African Descent Lutheran Association (ADLA), are people of God, rooted in the Gospel and redeemed by Jesus Christ.  ADLA members are committed to living out their faith by expressing love for one another and affirming ourselves and our cultural heritage as gifts to the church.

The Office of the Secretary has certified and recorded our new name with the Internal Revenue Service and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.  The resolution to change our name from African American to African Descent was submitted by the Baltimore Chapter at the 2011 Biennial Assembly in California.  The name change was approved by a majority vote with the express desire to convey our unity and solidarity with all people of African Descent.  I would like to encourage all chapters to update all outreach and membership materials to reflect our new name.

By developing their own agenda associations are grass roots organizations with programming (e.g. a biennial assembly) that edifies their respective ethnic community and assists the ELCA in becoming a multicultural and anti racist church.”

- The Rev. Dr. Sherman Hicks – Director for Ethnic Specific/ Multicultural Ministries.

Through its chapters and biennial assemblies, ADLA develops important linkages, advocate support for congregations, promotes implementation of the National African Descent Strategy, and provides fellowship, learning and sharing opportunities.  ADLA also provides a forum for theological reflections for clergy and lay members through collaboration with the Black Lutheran Ministerium (BLM) and the Conference of International Black Lutherans (CIBL).
