Night Activities
Creation for Kids in Church Camps
Many campers will be wary and even afraid of being outside at night, but night is an exciting time to explore the creation. Night nature studies provide an opportunity to confront that fear but also an incredibly interesting project for all age groups. Allow campers to bring flashlights along on night outings, but encourage them to leave them off unless instructed to use them. Night activities are also vital to any curriculum because they help to include groups that may not have been able to get to visit the naturalist because of an unusually busy day in camp or they might have been on a trip out of camp. By developing a night program, the naturalist basically gains another hour every day that can be used for nature study. Night is probably my favorite time to do nature study because the whole world seems different when viewed in the dim light and human senses are heightened when darkness diminishes sight. So take the time to explore creation at night!
