Snakes
Nature Games and Activities for Church Camps
Especially after handling snakes, use these games to teach about how snakes live and hunt in the wild. First, introduce snake locomotion by having the campers form one long snake hands to feet and trying to move towards a given goal. Often for this game, I play the role of the mouse and instruct the campers to run up and constrict me once the mouth of their snake have captured me.
Next, move on to discussing the strategy that snakes use to find and capture their prey. Unlike most of the predators in these games, snakes for the most part adopt a sit and wait approach. Instruct the campers to find a good hiding place along a given length of trail, but a spot from which they can quickly emerge to capture passing prey. Again for this game, a staff member should play the role of the prey and walk quietly along the path. Avoid any obvious snakes, but allow the campers who have hidden well to catch you.
