Domestic Violence

October is Domestic Violence Awareness month

It is not enemies who taunt me—I could bear that; it is not adversaries who deal insolently with me—I could hide from them. But it is you, my equal, my companion, my familiar friend, with whom I kept pleasant company; we walked in the house of God with the throng.

Psalm 55:12-14

What is domestic violence?

Domestic violence is a pattern of behavior. It is intimidation and abuse used to control another person. Partners may be married or not married, heterosexual, lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. They may be living together, separating, or dating.

Domestic violence happens to people of every income level, education level, race, religion, and profession. It is the leading cause of injury to American women and comes in many forms. It is a critical public health problem that has devastating physical and emotional consequences for women, children, and families.

The current economic downturn is disproportionately impacting women. Between September 2008 and April 2009, 75% of 600 domestic violence shelters surveyed nationwide reported that more women were seeking their services.

What can you do?

  • Post the locations and phone numbers of domestic violence abuse assistance organizations in your church’s restrooms.
  • Use this bulletin insert to provide a quick temple talk that points out how women are being affected by violence in your community and region, and across the nation and the world. Compare local statistics from your community with national statistics.
  • Use the bulletin insert one Sunday to promote an adult forum on domestic violence the following Sunday. You can use the talking points found at www.womensfundingnetwork.org/Poverty-Day-Media-Resources-2009 or invite the director of  your local domestic abuse center.
  • Encourage individuals in your unit and congregation to become involved by seeking out ways to learn more about domestic violence and how your community is addressing the problem.
