Anti-racism

The Today's Dream, Tomorrow's Reality (TDTR) Network

Today's Dream: Tomorrow's Reality (TDTR) is a network of peer educators who have answered a call the organization first made in 1996: to help Women of the ELCA live out its organizational principle to “claim and practice an anti-racist identity.”

TDTR teams provide anti-racism educational presentations and workshops for Women of the ELCA synodical boards and conventions, clusters/conferences, and congregational units. They also provide conference/cluster retreats and leadership retreats. Many are also active as members of their ELCA synod anti-racism efforts.

What do the workshops offer?

TDTR workshops are available in many areas, and presenters can adapt their materials to suit opportunities of varying lengths. A one-day workshop, for example, would feature:

  • a Bible study based on Acts 10, which begins each of four sessions;
  • a definition of racism and recognition of God's call to battle against it; and
  • introductions to concepts of "institutional racism," "white privilege," and "cultural conditioning."

How are workshops arranged?
Workshops should include at least 10 people, to allow for effective group interaction. The workshop hosts are asked to cover travel expenses, including meals and lodging, for workshop leaders. In addition, you will need to work with the workshop facilitator(s) to secure printed resources.

The quickest way to learn whether there are trained leaders in your area is to e-mail us. Your synodical women's organization president should also be able to connect you to your synodical anti-racism team members.

What does the future hold?
This is our start. There is a great deal more to learn and do in the area of anti-racism. Women of the ELCA is committed to learning what developing an anti-racist identity means to us as individuals, as congregational units, as synodical organizations, and as a whole. We trust the God of our Baptism as we commit ourselves to growth in this ministry and promote healing and wholeness in the church, the society, and the world.
