  April 2010

2010 state of the ministry
In recent years the churchwide president and treasurer, with the executive director, have begun presenting a "state of the ministry" address to the annual conference of synodical presidents. Read the highlights of their report.

Caring for creation: an extension of Christian hospitality
Lutheran women seem to have a "hospitality gene"—we tend to funeral dinners, host the Sunday coffee hour, and so forth. We also are called and even challenged by God to extend that gracious hospitality to all of creation. Read Creature Kindness, from the April issue of Lutheran Woman Today.

LWT Bible study introduction events
There may be an introduction to the 2010-2011 Bible study, "The People of God: Unity in the Midst of Diversity," taking place near you. This study by the Revs. Linda Johnson Seyenkulo and Jensen Seyenkulo will appear in Lutheran Woman Today magazine from September 2010 through May 2011.

Caring for the Earth as God's People

Caring for the Earth as God's People CoverDiscover what it means to have dominion over the earth and see why caring for the earth is an expression of gratitude to God for its riches. Use this short resource any time you want to explore increasing your commitment to caring for creation.

A related resource, which we featured last month in Bold Connections, is “Being Good Stewards of Water.” It presents easy ways to conserve and recycle water, which is good not only for the local and global environment but for your wallet, too.

Rachel's Day
Since 1996, Women of the ELCA has observed the first Sunday in May as Rachel's Day. The purpose of the day is to broaden awareness of the violence suffered by children and to encourage taking action to address it. Rachel's Day gets its name from Jeremiah 31:15-17,  wherein Rachel grieved for her children.
Rachels DaySee our Web site for more on the history and background of Rachel's Day, ideas for planning an observance in your congregation on May 2 or any time, and other resources, including a storybook project.
