August 2010

Lutheran Woman Today 2010-2011 Bible study videos now online
"The People of God: Unity in the Midst of Diversity,” begins in September. Download the first session and see the video overviews of the sessions. There is also a ritual for beginning a Bible study.

In a time when we seem to focus most on what divides us, the goal of this study is to help us understand how our different backgrounds, experiences and perspectives can be shared as we study the Bible together and focus on our common faith in Jesus Christ.

2010 grant recipients selected
An emergency shelter for women, a counseling service for survivors of domestic violence and a support network for caregivers are some of the programs promoting healing and wholeness for women that received grants this year from Women of the ELCA. See the full list of recipients.

Do we know when we're being guilty of "visual confirmation" or when we're being greedy?

New program: Living a Life of Daily Bread

Daily Bread CoverA reflection on the phrase "Give us this day our daily bread" that explores what you can learn by baking bread: patience, community, how to be intentional and attentive, and the joy that comes from wide-eyed anticipation. Download your free copy.

This resource can be used either for personal reflection or with a group. Since bread-making is a lost art in some places, you could use this as an opportunity for intergenerational sharing of skills and recipes.

"Give us this day our daily bread" was also the theme of the Lutheran World Federation Assembly, which recently wrapped up in Stuttgart, Germany.

Have you planned your programming yet for the coming year?

We have a short, easy-to-follow guide to planning that will help you get the most from your time together. We cover who to invite, how to brainstorm, how to evaluate your ideas, and more in this practical, step-by-step plan.

Celebrate your faith & revitalize yourself

One of our featured speakers for the Gathering will be Leymah Gbowee, a woman who brought peace to war-torn Liberia after more than a decade of civil war. She is the central figure in the documentary “Pray the Devil Back to Hell,” which chronicles the interfaith, female-led journey for Liberian peace.

Visit our Triennial Gathering pages to find out more about Gbowee and our other featured speakers, worship leaders and more!

Registration begins Sept. 15.

Nominations for churchwide secretary, treasurer and board members are now being accepted
Before the Triennial Gathering kicks off, the Triennial Convention takes place July 12-14. One of the delegates' tasks is to elect the four officers and 17 women who will make up the churchwide executive board for the next triennium.

The president and vice president are elected at the convention by nominating ballot (so no advance nominations are needed) but the other board positions are elected from a slate of nominees. Position descriptions, nomination forms and all the details on how this process works can be found on our Web site. Note that all nomination forms must be submitted online (printed and mailed forms will not be accepted). Nominations will be received through November 30.
