Convention hears from Presiding Bishop Hanson, completes resolutions

Delegates approve final memorials, resolutions, elect officers and board members

Delegates adopted final memorials during the afternoon session July 13. They adopted a memorial on gender justice that calls for learning about and advocating for protection of women and children from sexual violence, including women in the military affected by sexual violence, abuse and sexism. A second action combined two memorials calling for an end to hunger. It encourages members to send offerings to ELCA World Hunger through the churchwide Women of the ELCA organization, to link synodical Web pages to hunger resources, to encourage members to be hunger leaders and to join hunger communication networks. MORE


President and vice president elected, three memorials adopted

On the third ballot delegates elected Jennifer Michael, Pensacola, Fla., as the churchwide Women of the ELCA president. Michael was elected with 217 votes. Others receiving votes on the third ballot were JoAnn Fuchs, West Columbia, Texas, 79 votes; Kristine Brugamyer, Dickinson, N.D., 33 votes; Syd Brinkman, Allison, Iowa, 27 votes; and Betty Brandt, Grand Rapids, Minn., 18 votes. Reports, constitutional amendments, election highlights afternoon plenary

Delegates to Women of the ELCA Triennial Convention heard a number of reports in the afternoon plenary July 12, began voting for a new president and adopted several constitutional amendments. Convention reports were presented by Beth Wrenn, president; Anjanette Hodges, treasurer; and Charlene Spillmann, vice president. Linda Post Bushkofsky, executive director, reported on the churchwide organization of Women of the ELCA. MORE


Delegates worship, convene on first day of convention

Nearly 400 delegates were on hand as the Women of the ELCA convention opened in Spokane, Wash., July 12. Bishop Jessica Crist, ELCA Montana Synod, preached at the opening worship service. "Sisters we come here in need of renewal," she said. "It is good to be with women who 'get' the church--with women who are the church."  MORE
