Volunteer Covenant

We serve as a witness to God's love and grace in all we do

As a volunteer for the 2009 ELCA Youth Gathering, you are called to a very special and important ministry. Your service will contribute to the experience of Christ and community that people have at the Gathering.

We look forward to great things from all of our volunteer servants, and with good reason! The same God who creates us, who gives us life, and who guides us every day, also lives in and works through us to share God’s love and grace with all people. And so we covenant together in the following ways to live out God’s call for us at the Gathering and beyond:

  • In our MISSION we respond to God by promptly responding to all time commitments and service requests by:
    • Checking in with our volunteer coordinator(s) at the assigned time
    • Remaining at assigned tasks until released
    • Being flexible in tasks as well as schedule
  • In our WITNESS we exemplify Christ by honoring all Gathering procedures and guidelines by:
    • Refraining from the use of alcohol and drugs
    • Refraining from inappropriate sexual behavior
    • Never being alone with a young person
    • Adhering to the Gathering curfew
  • In our SERVANTHOOD we fill our work with spirit as we willingly and faithfully carry out all our ministry assignments.
    • These assignments may require that we are on our feet for long periods of time and may include some light lifting and bending.
  • In our DAILY MINISTRY we are visible reflections of Christ as we wear an identifying uniform whenever we are "on duty."
  • In our HOSPITALITY we share God’s love by always speaking in a positive and encouraging manner by:
    • Refraining from the use of profanity, racial slurs and sexual innuendos
    • Greeting every participant in a joyful, helpful and caring manner and tone
  • In our COMMUNITY we value God’s people and world by respecting the property and environment around us by:
    • Being considerate of hotel, convention center, Superdome and restaurant staff
    • Remembering that not everyone we meet is a part of the Gathering and being considerate
of those around us, especially local residents and tourists
    • Respecting the natural and created environment of New Orleans
  • In our JOY we get excited by the opportunity to love and serve God with all of our heart, soul and mind!
