[ ] In 1963, several participants who attended a lay school of theology at First Lutheran Church, in Brookings, South Dakota, formed a Faith in Life Institute. This institute was established to encourage community-wide dialog focused on the role of faith in daily life and work. The poster describes the first assembly which took place in Brookings on Sept. 15, 1963. The keynote speaker was Bishop Hanns Lilje, of the Hannover (Germany) State Church. Bishop Lilje served the church in many ways during his life. He also wrote a classic work called The Valley of the Shadow, a diary of his nine-month imprisonment during World War II for providing pastoral counseling to those involved in the plot to kill Adolph Hitler. The Faith in Life Assembly also included current film discussions, late night TV shows with panel discussions, seminars and discussion groups, and neighborhood dialogues in homes and coffee shops. The American Lutheran Church held similar events in 1964, 1965, and 1966 in other cities.
