Science, Ecology, and the Church

Science, Ecology, and the Church: Robert K. Menzel, pastor, Pacific Lutheran University faculty member, and ecologist, directed CHOICE (Center for Human Organization in Changing Environments) beginning in the early 1970s. It was funded, in part, by the American Lutheran Church. According to an article in The Lutheran "We're exploring innovative ways for the church to participate with other components of society as a responsible partner," Menzel said (July 21, 1971). CHOICE, along with four universities and a television station, produced The Eighth Day, a documentary whose purpose was to stimulate interest in ecology. Dr. Menzel, a pastor with the Lutheran Church — Missouri Synod, was also a member of the Lutheran Church in America's (LCA) Consultation on the Human Crisis in Ecology which helped to shape a statement on ecology adopted at the LCA's sixth biennial convention in Dallas, Texas, in 1972.
