What is a deaconess? A deaconess is a woman who is called by God to serve the church by proclaiming the Gospel through ministries of mercy and servant leadership.
Why are you called “Sister”?
We are called “Sister” because of our relationship to Christ and to each other in Community. By the way, “Sister” traditionally goes with our first name, not our last name.
What does it mean to be part of a Community?
We come together in prayer and support for one another and as an example to the church of the relationship Christ calls all Christians to have with each other. We gain strength from each other that supports and sustains us in our various ministries.
What is that cross you wear?
The cross is the symbol of our office in the church and is engraved with the deaconess verse, “The love of Christ compels us…” 2 Corinthians 5:14.
What is a garb and why do you wear it sometimes?
The garb is the traditional deaconess dress, black with a white collar, black suit or jumper with a white shirt. We individually choose when to wear it and when we feel it’s appropriate for the setting where we serve.
What kind of education and training do you have?
We are all trained for our professions and have degrees in whatever our field of service is, for example education or social work or nursing. Additionally, we all have theological education. Most of us have a Masters degree from a seminary of the ELCA or ELCIC. We spend time in formation events with our community and serve an internship prior to our consecration.
How much money do you make?
Our salary guidelines are the same as the Diaconal Minister and Associate in Ministry guidelines established by the synods where we serve.
Do you take vows?
We do not take the traditional vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience used in the Roman Catholic orders. We manage our own income, giving a proportion to the community; are free to be single or married; and promise to obey all rightful authority.
What kinds of ministry are you involved in?
We serve in a variety of traditional ministries, including parish work, education, nursing and health care chaplaincy, social service, and global missions. We also serve in some non-traditional ministries including a Companion Animal Program for children who have been abused and a Theater Arts Program.
