Pacific Lutheran Seminary to Install President

LULL INSTALLATION

Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary (PLTS), Berkeley, Calif.,
will install its sixth president April 26-27 with a reflective
weekend.  The Rev. Timothy F. Lull, 53, succeeds the Rev. Jerry
L. Schmalenberger, 62, who assumed the duties of a professor of
pastoral ministry at the seminary on Sept. 1, 1996.  The seminary
held a "celebration of service" for Schmalenberger on Feb. 23.
PLTS is one of eight seminaries of the Evangelical Lutheran
Church in America.  Lull was the seminary's academic dean and a
professor of systematic theology.  His installation as president
begins with a theological conference on "The Future of the Church
and the Future of Our Seminaries" with three other ELCA seminary
presidents: the Rev. David L. Tiede, Luther Seminary, St. Paul,
Minn.; the Rev. Roger W. Fjeld, Wartburg Theological Seminary,
Dubuque, Iowa; and the Rev. H. Frederick Reisz Jr., Lutheran
Theological Southern Seminary, Columbia, S.C.  Dr. Martha Ellen
Stortz, PLTS associate professor of historical theology and
ethics, will moderate the conference.  Lull's installation will
begin Saturday evening with an academic procession representing
various elements of the ELCA and the seminary's partnership in
the Graduate Theological Union with eight other Christian
seminaries.  ELCA Presiding Bishop H. George Anderson will
participate in the installation with Bishop Mark Ramseth of the
ELCA's Montana Synod, who chairs the seminary's board, and Lull's
sister, the Rev. Patricia J. Lull, Christ Lutheran Church,
Athens, Ohio.
