Lutheran Disaster Response to receive grant for typhoon relief efforts

Through Lutheran Disaster Response, ELCA members are responding to the most urgent needs of survivors of Typhoon Haiyan that struck the Philippines this month. To help support these relief efforts and encourage financial giving, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Foundation will partner with its members to commit up to $2 million, garnering these funds through several grant programs.

Through the Thrivent Choice program, eligible Thrivent members can direct Choice Dollars to Lutheran Disaster Response. Thrivent will double all Choice Dollars between now and Jan. 31, 2014, for up to a total of $500,000 of support, according to a Thrivent news release.

The Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Foundation is providing a combined $500,000 challenge matching grant to Lutheran disaster response agencies, offering a $1 match for every $2 donated and received by Dec. 31, 2013, or until the challenge amount has been met. The total potential impact of the challenge grant when combined with donations is $1.5 million. The ELCA’s Lutheran Disaster Response will be a grant recipient.

"The ELCA is blessed to have the support of Thrivent Financial, its members and Foundation,” said Daniel Rift, ELCA director world hunger and disaster appeal. “We are grateful for the potential this match provides for the work of help and hope in the Philippines and hope that the timing will encourage a renewed giving for this tragedy beyond the initial response. In Lutheran Disaster Response, the ELCA has a time proven avenue for cooperative work that is often in short order following a disaster.  It is exciting to have Thrivent Financial as part of that cooperative network. As with all of our support, 100 percent of gifts and of this match will go to the response effort.”

The ELCA continues to monitor the needs assessment through partner churches and affiliates in the Philippines and is committed to providing assistance for immediate and long-term recovery efforts. Lutheran Disaster Response disbursed $1 million through Lutheran World Relief to help support the immediate needs.
