Act Now

What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but do not have works? Can faith save you? If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food, and one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill’, and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead. James 2:14-17

Organize a Jubilee action party and build a movement for the passage of the Jubilee Act!

With the global economic crisis, 100 million more people will be pushed into extreme poverty in 2009, and impoverished countries are slipping further and further away from reaching the Millennium Development Goals. That is why we are asking you to host a Jubilee Action Party to get Lutherans mobilized for economic justice and join the campaign to pass the Jubilee Act.

The Jubilee Act calls for debt cancellation without harmful economic policy conditions, while ensuring transparency and accountability. It also urges responsible lending in the future to avoid a new debt crisis.

We encourage you to host your action meeting around mid-January to give you and fellow activists time to plan and organize an action for the "Change Not Chains" Week of Action to be held February 15-21.

Here are some resources to assist you in that planning:

ELCA Change Not Chains Poster PDF Format

The "Change, Not Chains" postcards are still available as well. Change Not Chains Post Card

ORDER YOUR CHANGE, NOT CHAINS POSTCARDS. Send a quick email to carly(at)jubileeusa.org or call 202-546-4470 to request any quantity of Jubilee's Change, Not Chains postcards to send to your Senators and Representatives, urging them to pass the Jubilee Act in this Congress.

Sudan Children Carrying Water on Head

Urgent Action Needed for Peace in Sudan!

The U.S. Government has asserted that the Sudanese Government is committing genocide against the people in Darfur. Estimates of innocent civilians killed range from 200,000 to more than 450,000. With more than half of Darfur’s seven million people either internally or externally displaced and exclusively dependent on external aid for shelter, food and water, the conflict in Darfur represents the worst humanitarian crisis in the world today. Read the full story.

Five important things you can do right now to help:

1) THANK President Obama for Releasing the Sudan Policy Review on 10/19/09, but tell him more is needed. Click here

2) LEARN all you can about the situation in Sudan. For additional information click here.

3) SUPPORT Lutheran relief and disaster response in south Sudan and Darfur; send your donation to ELCA International Disaster Response and designate your gift for “Sudan Crisis.” Your gift will be used in full—100 percent—for this ongoing disaster response. Gifts may be sent through ELCA congregations, by phone at 1-800-638-3522, online, or mailed to ELCA International Disaster Response, P.O. Box 71764, Chicago, IL 60694-1764.

4) PLAN a call-in campaign to your elected officials. Find out about pending legislations here.

5) SEE what's happening and what you can do now at  the Save Darfur Coalition.
