Democratic Republic of Congo

What Happened

In January 2008, the different armed groups in eastern DRC were brought together to agree on a cease fire and peace building.

However, on 28 August full-fledged fighting broke out in Masisi between Government forces and Laurent Nkunda's National Congress for the Defense of the People (CNDP), and spread.

An estimated 250,000 people have been displaced since the fighting intensified in August. The Geneva office of the UN World Food Program (WFP) reports that between 1.4 million and 2 million people are displaced in North Kivu, which includes those uprooted from earlier waves of fighting since 2007.
