As of November 16th, this disaster has claimed the lives of 192 individuals with 80 people still missing. Landslides buried homes and roads contributing the 14,000 individuals seeking refuge in the 117 established shelters across the country in schools, churches and community centers. El Salvador's government has declared a state of disaster, officially requesting assistance in providing 3,400 families with food, hygiene kits and shelter.
ELCA Response:
ELCA International Disaster Response is working to provide relief and show solidarity with our
companions in El Salvador. The Lutheran World Federation and the Salvadoran Lutheran Synod
are providing immediate food and cooking supplies to families in need. Lutheran World Relief is
also working with their local community partners to provide relief in their areas of operation.
Over the next few weeks, additional assessments will be conducted in order to plan for long-term recovery
of the families affected in this disaster.
