U.S. Flooding

Minot, North Dakota

The Situation:

More than 4,000 homes in Minot, North Dakota are estimated to be affected by flooding. Businesses and other structures are damaged or destroyed after record-breaking flood waters consumed the town.  The flood crest occurred in the early morning on June 26, 2011 at a height of 1,561.72 feet, or nearly four feet above the previous record, set in 1881.  While the water began to slowly recede on June 26, the forecast is that the water will remain up in many areas for a week or more.

According to Bishop Mark Narum (ELCA Western North Dakota Synod), Christ Lutheran and Augustana Lutheran, both in Minot, have been flooded and are likely to have at least 2 feet of water on their main floors. The Bishop reported that several congregations throughout the western part of the state have significant damage from seepage as a result of the saturated ground.

Minot, North Dakota is one of many areas affected by flood waters in the Midwest. Please consider making a donation today to help support the people of Minot and others across the Midwest who are facing flood water damage.

ELCA Response:

Access the ELCA Disaster Response Blog page.

The ELCA, through Lutheran Disaster Response, has already issued emergency grants totaling $25,000 for Lutheran Social Services of North Dakota and the ELCA Western North Dakota Synod to begin assisting in the response.  With the expectation that some areas will be flooded for more than six weeks, the clean-up process will be a long and arduous task.
