Jesus, Justice, Jazz: The Tour (Fall/Winter 2009)
As part of the Change the World: 2009 Lutheran Youth Challenge, musical artists Agape, LOST AND FOUND, and Rachel Kurtz are on tour to help change the world. Join them for a powerful and exciting evening of music, storytelling, and encouragement in your journey of faith.  Prior to the event, the artists are challenging each participant to bring at least $20 to support ELCA World Hunger. These donations will be counted toward the $1 million goal of the Youth Challenge.  [For local information, contact the host sites]

ELCA World Hunger Education and Advocacy grants (off-cycle): ongoing in 2009
ELCA World Hunger Education and Advocacy grants fund activities of organizations that work for justice by using a variety of education and advocacy strategies to address the root causes and solutions of hunger. Off-cycle grant applications are now being accepted. Off-cycle grant requests must be for projects that have not already been funded this year by ELCA World Hunger.  Download the information sheet below, which provides contact information for requesting an application.

Global Formation Events

Global Formation Events (GFEs) bring together experts and resources on global and domestic ministry under one roof, for one weekend, in one convenient location so congregational leaders can build skills to be an effective part of God’s mission no matter where they are.  Here is the final GFE for 2009:

Art Simon book tour; through Nov. 22, 2009 (NATIONWIDE)
The founder and first president of Bread for the World, Art Simon, will be touring various areas of the country from Sept. 1 through November 22 to promote his new book.  He will make stops in many states and regions. Access the full schedule to see if he'll be in a city near you.

Art’s new book, The Rising of Bread for the World: An Outcry of Citizens Against Hunger, tells the story of Art’s early years, the founding of Bread for the World, and the victories and challenges that laid the groundwork for the powerful movement against hunger and poverty Bread for the World has become.

World AIDS Day liturgy; Dec. 1 (annually)
The global theme for the 2009 World AIDS Day (Dec. 1) is “Universal Access and Human Rights."  ELCA congregations are encouraged to use a worship liturgy the weekend before or after Dec. 1 that was prepared by the Ecumenical Advocacy Alliance, which receives support from ELCA World Hunger.


Diakonia Leadership Institute IV: Hunger and Environmental Justice in Low-Income Communities; Dec. 4–6, 2009 in Oviedo, FL

This event will explore the root causes of environmental injustice in low-income communities, examine how it impacts hunger, and discern a response. ELCA World Hunger is co-sponsoring this event with the ELCA Poverty Ministries Networking Program.  The application period ended November 2. Lutheran AIDS Network - Immersion Trip to San Bernardino, CA; January 15-29, 2010
The Lutheran AIDS Network (LANET) is hosting a study tour to Central City Lutheran Mission (CCLM) in San Bernardino, California. CCLM offers a Supportive Housing Program for people living with HIV and AIDS, a community health clinic, and outreach and rehabilitation for people who have been homeless and drug users.  For more information, visit the Lutheran AIDS Network.

Developing Hearts that Yearn for Justice 2010; January 18-21, 2010  (San Diego, CA / Tijuana, Mexico)
An ecumenical theological reflection in a third-world setting for clergy and lay church workers...this event will focus on "reflecting on the Gospel and justice for women and children." Come listen... share... learn... engage... stretch... question.

Souper Bowl of Caring; February 7, 2010
This youth-led, ecumenical event mirrors the annual football game on a Sunday in January or February and asks youth to raise money for and awareness about people who are hungry. Youth traditionally stand outside the sanctuary after worship on that Sunday and collect at least $1 and/or one can of food from congregation members as they leave worship. Many congregations donate all or a portion of monetary donations to ELCA World Hunger, and many donate cans to a local food pantry or shelter.  Register your group at the Souper Bowl of Caring Web site.

The Lutheran World Federation's Eleventh Assembly; Stuttgart, Germany (July 20-27, 2010)
The LWF Assembly meets every six to seven years. It is the highest governing body of the 140-member communion of churches.The 2010 LWF Assembly theme is "Give us today our daily bread."  [Related: LWF North America]

World Food Day; Oct. 16 (annually)
World Food Day is a worldwide event designed to increase awareness, understanding and informed, year-around action to alleviate hunger. Visit the World Food Day USA Web site for more background, or browse ELCA resources for congregations for ways you can lift up the work of ELCA World Hunger on or around Oct. 16.
