Having the Day Off!

Hey, you are just in time! Meet Rocky. Today is a very important day in Rocky's town. It's Eid-ul-Fitr, the last day of Ramadan.

You know those days when your parents are going crazy and you feel like everything around you is happening so fast? That is today! Rocky's family is Muslim.

A Muslim practices Islam. Islam is a religion that shares some things with Christianity. Islam's sacred book, the Koran, talks about Adam and Eve, Abraham and even Jesus. The major prophet is Mohammed, who came nearly 600 years after Jesus.

The crescent is a symbol of Islam. Islam does not believe the Koran should be translated. That is why Rocky has to learn Arabic. Christians have translated the Bible into hundreds of languages, including Arabic and Bengla (and of course, English!).

Ahh, rice! Rocky loves rice. But Rocky should not eat too much now because tonight there will be a big party. Remember: Today is Eid-ul-Fitr, the last day of Ramadan. Ramadan is a month-long Muslim celebration. The entire month Rocky and other Muslims eat only before sunrise and after sunset. You know what many kids' favorite thing about Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr is?

NO SCHOOL!!!

They like their teacher, but a MONTH off can be fun!! Normally Muslims pray early in the morning before school. Muslims pray five times a day. How often do you pray? The kids are now done with their prayers and can play cricket or soccer.

Every celebration needs music! In Bangladesh Woman playing Harmoniumpeople use many instruments. Sometimes people play music on a ektara, especially for old, old songs.

At our celebrations, there is always lots of good food to eat and friends and family to have fun with. Curry is a popular food in Bangladesh.

Well, the party's over, and it's bedtime. Come back to Bangladesh anytime!
