$250,000 = 100 traditional water wells OR 1,660 hand water pumps OR 125,000 water jugs OR 100,000 feet of irrigation
Clean water is one of the most powerful ways to make change in the world. When a woman has a well right in her village, she doesn’t have to spend all morning walking to get water. She can reclaim enough time to make up two full months of labor. Earn money. Put food on the table. Send her children to school so that they secure a better future, all while investing in the local economy. One water well can open a world of opportunity.

Our goal is to raise $250,000 in 2012 to support the water projects of ELCA World Hunger where they are needed most. Just think, $250,000 could mean 100 wells — each one with the potential of bringing clean water to 500 families at a time.

Where will the money go?
Your gifts to ELCA World Hunger support projects in nearly 60 countries around the world, many of which contain clean water components. Here are some examples:
  • In Sudan, water wells provide clean water to people returning to their homeland after decades of war.
  • In the United States, congregations and programs provide water to families in rural areas of Arizona and West Virginia who don’t have running water.
  • In China, irrigation canals bring water to rural communities otherwise without access to water for drinking and farming.
  • In the Central African Republic, spring boxes supply fresh water to as many as 2,000 people at a time and last for decades.
