Souper Bowl of Caring
This youth-led, ecumenical event mirrors the annual football game on a Sunday in January or February and asks youth to raise money for and awareness about people who are hungry. Youth traditionally stand outside the sanctuary after worship on that Sunday and collect at least $1 and/or one can of food from congregation members as they leave worship. Many congregations donate all or a portion of monetary donations to the ELCA World Hunger Appeal, and many donate cans to a local food pantry or shelter.
Visit www.souperbowl.org for information about the most recent event details, giving totals, and available promotional materials. Or see how ELCA Lutherans have done. |

Taking Root (new hunger education curriculum)
|
<NEW> Taking Root: Hunger Causes, Hunger Hopes curriculum
Taking Root is a complete curriculum for your congregation. The curriculum includes five sessions each for three different age groups: grades 3–6, grades 7–9 (junior high), and grades 10–12 (senior high). All age groups have parallel content, so the biblical texts and themes, children's literature, and many projects and activities are the same among the age levels.

Open a World of Possibilities
|
Open a World of Possibilities: Nicaragua follows Megan Orth, a 12-year-old from Salem Lutheran Church in Catonsville, Maryland, as she experiences first-hand what life is like for kids and their families in Nicaragua. OWP: Nicaragua is a seven-session hunger education curriculum that can be used in ELCA congregations of any size. Each of the sessions is a multi-generational event that lasts about 90-minutes.
U-Ball
| This interactive volleyball and dodgeball game--sponsored by the ELCA World Hunger Appeal and Lutheran World Relief—made its debut at the Atlanta Youth Gathering. Young people played with "challenges" - both too many material goods and too few (plus other things that make it really hard for people who are poor to escape poverty). You can run a U-Ball session or tournament at youth "lockdowns" or other meetings. |

ELCA Good Gifts
|
Help members of your youth group, Sunday school, women's, men's and other congregational groups break out of the frantic "spend-give" cycle of the holidays and Christmas with gifts to the ELCA World Hunger Appeal. This catalog gives examples of how far even small amounts of money can stretch when used by our church and its partners to help people in need. This resource is often used to put on "alternative giving fairs," in which people "buy" symbolic gifts in honor of others to help people who are hungry.
Hunger Meals
Want to get a better idea of how people who are hungry eat or the limited food they attempt to survive on? Facilitate one of these hunger meals in your congregation or youth group as a hands-on way of emphasizing the importance understanding hunger.
Meal 1 Meal 2 Hungry Decisions (Church World Service) An interactive, educational resource that simulates the daily struggles of impoverished people. |
