Women and Children
In the Peruvian mountain region of Palca, woolen handcrafts have been a tradition for women for many years. But when a community organization began to help women collaborate, this traditional craft became an important source of income for them and their families.
The 19 women in the Taller Artesenal Workshop make handcrafts together, often with alpaca wool and other natural fibers. “When we first started working together,” said one woman, “our husbands thought we were just leaving the house to gossip. Now that we have an income, they don’t complain so much about our group!”
Through our ELCA World Hunger partner Lutheran World Relief, the women now have an electric wool-spinning machine, increasing production and income. ELCA World Hunger gifts make sustainable solutions like these possible.
