Meet Yohani

Hunger stories - MalawiAlidia’s little son Yohani, now age 2, had a tough start in life. The long drought that usually happens before harvest was longer than normal, making that annual “hunger season” hungrier than ever.

But thanks to your generosity to ELCA World Hunger, he’s now a happy, healthy boy, and his mother and neighbors have hope for more secure harvests for years to come.

Neighbors learned together how to manage the solar-powered pumps, tanks, reservoirs and pipes that make up the new irrigation system. Farmers learned how to work with alternative, drought-resistant crops for better, more dependable yields.

As those new crops were growing, what could have been a hard “hunger season” wasn’t as hard as it could have been, thanks to your generosity to ELCA World Hunger. The emergency food supplies that your gifts helped make possible tided people over until the new harvest came in.

Thanks to you, little Yohani recovered his health and can look forward to a more secure future. And his mother has recovered her smile.
