Humanitarian Crisis

Angola has received significant below average amounts of rainfall in 2013. At the national level, it has been reported that more than 1.8 million people are experiencing severe food insecurity.

Lutheran Disaster Response, through The Lutheran World Federation and in partnership with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Angola, is responding to the needs of the most vulnerable. With a grant of $200,000, we will be providing basic food assistance and helping to improve community resilience and community-managed disaster risk reduction.

Central African Republic

The political crisis in the Central African Republic has triggered civil war. The entire population of the Central African Republic, 4.6 million people, is affected and hundreds of thousands of people need emergency shelter, healthcare and food aid. The breakdown of law and order has led to widespread violation of human rights, including targeted killings, rapes, torture, arbitrary arrests and the recruitment of child soldiers.

Lutheran Disaster Response, in partnership with The Lutheran World Federation and other international humanitarian organizations, will provide food, education, protection, psychosocial support, peace building, access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene services to save lives of populations in displaced camps or in host communities inside the Central African Republic. Because of gifts from people like you, we are able to provide $300,000 toward these relief efforts.

Prolonged dry spells have led to a food and water crisis in Namibia where the president has declared a national drought emergency.

Lutheran Disaster Response, in partnership with The Lutheran World Federation, is providing $150,000 to respond to this humanitarian crisis. We are working with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Republic of Namibia and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia, along with other partners to maximize this response.

What you can do:

As the communities work to recover, please keep them and those who work on their behalf in prayer. You can use these prayers and resources in your worship services.

Your gifts help provide quick, effective responses to disasters. Donations from people like you allow the ELCA to respond with flexibility to those in need.
