Health Care Social Statement

ELCA Church Council Action CC03.04.11

Passed by the 2003 ELCA Church Council.

Resolved

To commend the Division for Church in Society and the task force on health and health care for the proposed social statement “Caring for Health: Our Shared Endeavor;”

To acknowledge the many strengths of the document, but also to acknowledge the concerns of this council related to the definition of key terms, clarity of language, and sequencing of thought, as detailed in the report of the Program and Services Committee;

To authorize a delay in transmission of the final version of the proposed social statement on health and health care in order to address these concerns and to allow for final editing in reparation for the 2003 ELCA Churchwide Assembly;

To direct the Division for Church in Society, in consultation with the Office of the Presiding Bishop and the Office of the Secretary, in order to address the concerns of this council, to prepare a final draft of the document for approval by the Executive Committee no later than June 6, 2003; and

To request that the provisional document with information related to the process for completion and distribution of the final document be distributed to synods within the time frame mandated by the policies of this church.
