Introduction
In 2001, the Churchwide Assembly voted in favor of two resolutions. The first resolution led to the task force’s 2005
Report and Recommendations on the blessing of same-gender unions and the rostering of persons in committed gay or lesbian relationships. The second resolution authorized the development of a social statement on human sexuality.
The Task Force for ELCA Studies on Sexuality has listened carefully to the responses from members of the ELCA to the
three sexuality studies. It is with this feedback and understanding of the varying opinions within the ELCA that the task force has created the Draft Social Statement on Human Sexuality.
Currently, synods across the country are holding
hearings, as an opportunity for members of the ELCA to provide comment on the draft and to listen to others share their perspectives. The task force will then consider these comments when creating the proposed statement, which is the text that will come before the ELCA Church Council and the 2009 Churchwide Assembly. If your synod is not holding a hearing or you are unable to attend, you have the opportunity to
respond online, by e-mail, or via written letters to the task force.
