Information on this Discussion

The Division for Church in Society and the Division for Higher Education and Schools of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America have cooperated in producing Educational Choice. Its publication was made possible by a grant from Lutheran Brotherhood. The study was prepared by John R. Stumme, associate director for studies in the Division for Church in Society. He was assisted by Melvin M. Kieschnick, an associate in ministry with broad experience with both Lutheran and public schools. Comments on the discussion guide may be sent to the Department for Studies.

This resource has been prepared to stimulate thought and discussion. It is not a policy statement of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America or of the boards of the Division for Church in Society and the Division for Higher Education and Schools.

A companion volume to this study is also available. In "Two Essays on Educational Choice: Lutheran Perspectives," Louis Almen considers theological issues and Marie Failinger writes on constitutional questions. This volume may also be ordered through the ELCA Distribution Center at the cost of $2.00 per copy, plus postage and handling.

An electronic meeting on LutherLink called "Educational Choice" will open on January 1, 1996. John Scibilia, Director of Schools and Early Childhood Centers of the Division for Higher Educational and Schools, will convene the meeting. The "Educational Choice" meeting offers people studying the document the possibility to converse with others doing so in other contexts. The meeting will continue as long as there is interest.
