St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church

St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, at 3052 N. Spaulding Avenue, near Barry Avenue, was organized in 1904 in the Avondale area of Chicago, as a member of the Augustana Synod.
Swedish residents of Avondale came together and organized the Swedish Evangelical Lutheran St. John's Church of Avondale on May 18, 1904.
A flat was rented at 1811 N. Kedzie Ave., which was used for worship services and Sunday School. In 1905 the congregation purchased the third lot on Spaulding Ave., south of Barry Ave., on the west side of the street. The church was built and dedicated in 1907.
As many of the Swedish residents of Avondale began moving northward, the congregation considered moving to Albany Park in 1916, but opted to buy four lots on the west side of Troy Street, between Barry and Wellington. After the First World War, Swedish families continued to move from Avondale, and it was decided to dispose of the lots on Troy Street and purchase a more desirable site in the future.
St. John's dissolved in 1942 with members joining either Albany Park or Saron.
