A Gift of Food

November - December 2008

Food for Life: Recipes and Stories on the Right to Food , is a new cookbook published by the Lutheran World Federation–North America (LWF), the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada. It contains global recipes adapted for North American cooks plus stories of how people in the Lutheran community work together to improve lives and address root causes of poverty and hunger.

A Gift of FoodThis book uses recipes, stories and table blessings from different contexts and cultures to prepare global dishes for family and congregation and to lift up the work of the Lutheran World Federation. One-third of all ELCA World Hunger Appeal funds go directly to LWF projects that strengthen global food security around the world.

Enhanced with color photos, Food for Life is meant for any cook with global tastes. The book contains four sections:

  • The Agricultural Cycle: dishes for growing, planting, harvesting and “hungry” seasons.

  • The Religious Cycle: dishes for Christian, Muslim, Hindu and Buddhist religious celebrations and feasts or fasting times.

  • The Life Cycle: dishes for births and birthdays, weddings and funerals, and other festive occasions and family celebrations.

  • Daily Life: dishes that families eat (and drink) for breakfast, main meals, and snacks or desserts.
