Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Central African Republic
In the Central African Republic, people make
drums out of almost anything. Drums are the primary source of music used during worship, and well as for other social events.
Make your own
drums using ice cream buckets, coffee cans, oatmeal containers, etc.
Materials needed:
Ice cream buckets, coffee cans, oatmeal containers, etc. with lids. (You may wish to ask each participant to bring their own, but have extras available for those who do not.)
Construction paper
Glue or tape
Markers or paints
Cut a piece of construction paper to fit around the can or container. Before putting it on the container, paint or color the paper in bright designs. Tape the paper around your drum.
Let participants play the drum. Try to do different rhythms. Can you sing to drum accompaniment?
Try songs such as
We are Marching in the Light of God.
