Malagasy Lutheran Church (Fiangonana Loterana Malagasy, FLM)
In Madagascar, people play a board game called
Fanorona. You can make your own board and play it.
FanoronaMaterials needed:
Cardboard (poster board, inside of cereal boxes, shirt cardboard, etc.)
Black markers
Colored markers or paints
Rulers
Beans, rocks, or small buttons in two colors or kinds for game pieces
Snack size plastic bags
Give each crafter a piece of cardboard approximately 8" by 10". Using a ruler, draw a 6" square in the middle of the cardboard with black marker. Follow the pattern shown below to draw the lines inside the square. (Do not draw the small circles.) Use a ruler for all lines, to keep them straight.
Make a colorful border around the game board with markers or paints. You may color inside the board also.
Distribute game pieces. Each game needs 10 pieces, 5 of one color and 5 of another. The game pieces should be placed as shown by the small circles on the diagram, with one color on one side of the board and the other color on the other side.
The object of the game is to capture all your opponent's pieces. Pieces are captured by landing on them. Pieces may be moved from one "intersection" of lines to another. Pieces may be moved forward, backward, diagonally, in any direction. No jumping or moving past a point of intersection. When a player has captured all of the other's pieces, the game is over.
