Jewelry made out of shells and seeds is a common adornment in Papua New Guinea. You can make your own seed necklace.

Seed necklace

Materials needed:

Seeds (pumpkin, squash, sunflower, or other large seeds)
Needles (make sure they are large enough for the heavy thread)
Button & carpet thread
Scissors
Thimbles

Thread the needle with a piece of thread long enough to be put comfortably over your head. Knot the end of the thread.

Push the needle through a seed using a thimble. Push the seeds to the end of the thread.

Continue to fill the whole thread with seeds. You may put them on randomly, or in a pattern. When finished, tie the thread ends together to form the necklace.

Another option: Use beads or pieces of macaroni as spacers between beads to make the necklace more quickly.

Papua New Guinea is filled with beautiful tropical flowers. Make your own flowers out of tissue paper.

Paper flowers

Materials needed:

Red tissue paper
Pipe cleaners (yellow and green)
Glue
White paper

To make lilies, cut white paper in using the pattern shown below. Take a yellow pipe cleaner, fold it in half, and twist it together to form a stamen about 2-1/2" high. Attach a green pipe cleaner to the bottom of it to form the stem.

Now place the bottom of the stamen (where it meets the stem) in the indented spot at the wide end of the petal. Wrap the petal around the stamen to form a conical lily, and glue in place.

To make hibiscus, cut five petals out of red tissue paper using the same pattern. Form a stamen as you did for the lily. Gather the narrow ends of the petals around the bottom of the stamen. Wrap a green pipe cleaner tightly around the petals to hold in place. (You may wish to wrap tape around it first). Let the green pipe cleaner extend down to form a stem.
