Long ago, Koreans believed that the blue dragon would protect them from the east, and the white tiger would protect Korea from the west. This is why the blue dragon can be found on the east side of many temples in Korea.

Korean Blue Dragon Puppet

Materials needed:

Blue construction paper
Scraps of any color construction paper
Brown paper lunch bags
Cotton balls
Blue and black markers or crayons
Pencil
Glue
Scissors

Color the bag blue. Following the patterns shown, draw the teeth, tongue, crown and spine on blue construction paper. Cut out. Cut out a triangle nose of another color.

Glue crown, teeth and tongue to the bottom of the paper bag that will become the puppet's head. Glue on cotton ball eyes and the nose. Add nose dots with black marker.

Fold along the straight edge of the spine. Glue along the center back of puppet. Draw scales on puppet with black marker or crayon, then draw foot with four claws on the bottom front.

The lotus is a popular bloom throughout much of Asia, and you can make a pencil holder with it.

Lotus pot

Materials needed:

Empty soup can
Blue and white felt
Glue
Scissors

Cut a piece of blue felt to fit around the can and glue in place.

With white felt, cut 10 petals using the pattern shown. Glue petals in place on the can, following the diagram. Let dry.
