Mission History

Lutheran Church in Great Britain

Given the international character of London and Great Britain, there have always been Lutheran congregations worshipping in the United Kingdom since the 16th century. Many of these congregations worshipped in the language of its congregants’ homeland, which remains true to this day, too.

In 1962 Lutheran congregations using English for worship constituted the Lutheran Church in Great Britain (LCiGB).

The Lutheran Church in Great Britain became a part of the Lutheran Council of Great Britain. Established in 1948, the Lutheran Council of Great Britain represents and co-ordinates the common work of ten different Lutheran churches that have congregations or chaplaincies in Great Britain. Together they serve some 120,000 persons in Britain.
