Women and Justice
The 2009 Churchwide Assembly authorized the development of a social statement on women and justice. After a delayed start, the ELCA Task Force on Women and Justice: One in Christ is now at work, charged with the responsibility to lead this process. The task force represents diverse walks of life, perspectives, gender, geography, ethnicity and skills that provide a diversity of thoughtful voices. The range of issues the task force will explore remains open-ended since there are many issues that affect individuals, congregations, communities and society.
During this study phase of the process, the task force is encouraging and hosting listening events and is preparing study materials for use throughout the church. The study phase has been extended, allowing the task force to bring a proposed social statement to the 2019 ELCA Churchwide Assembly. The task force found it necessary to extend the process for several reasons, including the delayed start of their work, the importance of adequate time to consider the many issues, the need for time to develop greater participation across the church, and the desire to develop a variety of resources to encourage learning.
