New braille edition of ELW

New braille edition of ELW
The Evangelical Lutheran Worship Braille Edition is a new worship resource that will help congregations serve and support visually impaired members and visitors.

Augsburg Fortress and the ELCA are announcing the publication this summer of Evangelical Lutheran Worship Braille Edition: Service Music and Hymns. This edition contains the words to all service music and hymn texts from Evangelical Lutheran Worship on braille-embossed pages. Congregations are invited to provide a copy for each braille-using worshiper’s use.

The new Braille Edition provides the complete texts for all 743 service music items and hymns from the Pew Edition, as well as some new features compared with its predecessor, Lutheran Book of Worship Braille Edition. In Lutheran Book of Worship Braille Edition, for example, there were no page breaks between hymns. Evangelical Lutheran Worship Braille Edition, which will be published in eight to nine volumes, includes page breaks between the hymns, which helps make it easier for a person to select only the pages needed for a given worship service.

All the contents have been prepared and thoroughly reviewed by a team of experienced braille users. Pages are loose-leaf and produced on sturdy letter-size (8.5 x 11) paper, punched to fit a three-ring binder, and packaged in multiple re-closable corrugated storage boxes, each labeled with the page range included in that box.

Who purchases braille editions of a worship resource such as this? Most often, a congregation purchases a copy for a visually impaired person’s exclusive use. When the price of $375 is too much for a congregation or individual to afford, there is almost always a local donor from that congregation or synod who is happy to underwrite the cost on behalf of the worshiper or congregation.

Orders will be shipped when the minimum press commitment of 20 ordered copies has been achieved and manufacturing has been completed, estimated to be after July 1, 2014. To learn more or to order today, visit the Augsburg Fortress online store at or call 800-328-4648.
