Mexico

Context

The central Mexican highlands are characterized by breath-taking mountains, religious devotion, markets filled with tacos al pastor, children playing soccer on neighborhood streets and a passion for family.  The global metropolis of Mexico City sits in the Valley of Mexico at over 7,000 feet above sea level.  The metropolitan area of Mexico City is home to around 22 million people making one of the largest cities in the world. Mexico is a complex country with extremes of wealth and poverty and a complicated relationship with the United States.  Although the YAGM Mexico program is based in Mexico City, volunteers may find themselves in one of the smaller surrounding cities or pueblos. Mexico is a largely Roman Catholic country and, though the Lutheran church has a small presence, the YAGM Mexico program work sites are in largely secular social service agencies that do important work in the areas of the rights of children, migration, women’s rights, community building, English language classes, and environmental education to name a few.  Volunteers will also be placed in homestays with local Mexican families where they will have the opportunity to more deeply explore some of the complex issues facing Mexico.

Periodically, the YAGM Mexico group will come together for retreats involving community building, worship, reflection and exploration of important issues related to global systems, questions of justice and their role as people of faith.
