Schmieder Leadership Scholarship
for women faculty at ELCA colleges and seminaries
Purpose The purpose of this scholarship is to develop and promote women's leadership at ELCA colleges and seminaries by assisting women administrators and faculty to participate in a leadership and management training institute (such as the Summer Institute for Women in Higher Education at Bryn Mawr College).
History
This scholarship was begun by Charlotte Fiechter, the second executive director of Women of the ELCA, to encourage academic and administrative leadership among women on our ELCA college, university, and seminary faculties and staffs. The funds for this scholarship are from interest on the Schmieder Endowment Fund. To date, 22 women have attended summer institutes, each receiving between $2,000 and $4,000, with additional monetary assistance from her college, university, or seminary.
Eligibility and guidelinesThe applicant:
- must be nominated by the president of her institution
- may attend the institute of her choice, provided that the program includes work in governance, financial management, administration, and professional development
- must gain admission to the institute of her choice and provide written confirmation of admission to the institute before the scholarship is disbursed
- must show that her institution is sharing the cost of the summer institute by providing financial support in a variety of ways, such as transportation, staff support as necessary, and so forth
Additional Scholarship Committee considerations
- Applicant’s expectations from the institute are clearly stated and attainable.
- Preference is given to applicants who have the terminal degree in their discipline.
- Preference is given to applicants with at least three years experience in teaching or administration.
- Involvement of applicants in Women of the ELCA.
Recipient commitment
- Inform Women of the ELCA in writing of any change in plans.
- Submit an evaluation of the institute experience to Women of the ELCA within three months of the training.
- Share learning experiences with colleagues at her home institution and, if requested, at Women of the ELCA events.
Please note
Maximum amount awarded to any recipient for this scholarship is $4,000.
Women of the ELCA reserves the right not to award scholarships in any given year.
