Kathryn M. Lohre will be installed as president of the National Council of Churches Nov. 9 at the ELCA Lutheran Center in Chicago.

Faithful leadership

Kathryn M. Lohre says she has been formed as a leader "by a young church that is, at its core, an ecumenical church." As an ELCA member, she is grateful that this church supports her leadership as president of the National Council of Churches. Kathryn is the first Lutheran and the youngest woman to serve in that role.

The 2011 ELCA Churchwide Assembly voted to support immigration reform and the DREAM Act.

Welcoming newcomers

In Nov. 1 letters to U.S. President Barack Obama and Congress, ELCA Presiding Bishop Mark Hanson called for comprehensive immigration reform and support for the DREAM Act, legislation that would create a path for citizenship to high school graduates.

Hanson urged the president and Congress to explore compassionate policy reforms that advance the common good.

Members of the ELCA and African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church have been meeting in bilateral discourse since 2006.

Historic Summit

Members of the ELCA and African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church will gather for a covenant worship service Sept. 16 and daylong summit Sept. 17 to celebrate and explore how congregations of both denominations can engage in ministry together.

The relationship between both denominations may be the first time in U.S. history where a historically White church and historically Black church have agreed to cooperative ministry.
