The Deaconess Community

The Deaconess Community consists of theologically trained, professionally prepared women, called to ministry and service by congregations and synods of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada.




History, Formation, and Spirituality Course

January Elective

The course covers the history of diakonia through the centuries, its present expressions, and its future possibilities. Examine and discern your own call to ministry, while exploring opportunities for individual and communal spiritual formation. Students will explore the development of spiritual disciplines essential to all Christians, particularly to rostered leaders. It offers a full seminary credit particularly in Church History.

The Deaconess Community celebrated 125 years of Word and Service ministry on July 18-19, 2009 in Atlanta, GA. Our deaconesses were instrumental in founding many Lutheran hospitals, congregations, and social ministry organizations. [more]
