Pandemic Flu

Faithful Response to the Flu

As of June 11, the World Health Organization has re-classified the H1N1 outbreak, commonly referred to as swine flu, as a Phase 6 pandemic.  Please note -- this re-classification does not necessarily indicate an increased severity of the virus.  Rather, it indicates that the virus is expected to impact every nation, and those nations that have not yet been impacted should expect and plan for future cases.

Here in the United States, the virus has been steadily spreading since mid-April, and as such, this re-classification does not actually change anything about the ongoing response.  For the most up-to-date information, including steps that individuals and families can take to prevent the spread of the disease, please visit the Centers for Disease Control’s Web site.

The church has served a unique role historically when previous pandemics have impacted society.  ELCA Domestic Disaster Response has produced several resources to guide the church through a discernment process regarding pandemic flu.

One resource is entitled "Congregational Planning for Flu Pandemic," and it includes specific information for the continuation of important congregational functions in the event of a pandemic.  ELCA Worship staff have also created a document with specific guidelines for worship activities including distribution of communion and the passing of the peace, called "Worship in Times of Public Health Concerns."

Another resource is entitled "Responding Faithfully in a Time of Pandemic Flu," a document created to prepare congregations to serve their community in the event of a pandemic incident.  It refers directly to selections from past ELCA social statements on what it means to be a public church and the role of congregations.

Also, the National Council of Churches has posted information to their Web site, regarding best practices for congregations dealing with H1N1 and seasonal flu.  To reference their information, click here.

In the spring of 2008, the Inter-Lutheran Coordinating Committee published an entire edition of its pastoral care journal, Caring Connections, on the topic of spiritual care in times of pandemic.  Click here to download this edition of the journal.

There is certainly an abundance of information about dealing with the flu in public settings, and we hope that you will find these materials helpful and practical for your congregation and your community.  ELCA Disaster Response will continue to provide the church with updated and accurate information regarding pandemic flu, and staff are always available to answer questions or concerns.  Please contact Kevin Massey at 773-380-2822 or Michael Nevergall at 773-380-2863 for more information.
