Proposed statement on Criminal Justice

The Church and Criminal Justice: Hearing the Cries

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in American (ELCA) is preparing a social teaching statement addressing issues in criminal justice. Work on this statement was mandated by the2007 ELCA Churchwide Assembly and led by the ELCA Task Force on Criminal Justice, which has now issued a proposed statement entitled: The Church and Criminal Justice: Hearing the Cries. The proposed statement also includes 11 implementing resolutions. The text and the resolutions have been reviewed by the Conference of Bishops in March 2013 and the Church Council in April 2013 and a recommended text will be acted upon at the 2013 ELCA Churchwide Assembly in August.

Please note: The recommended proposed social statement as available on this page is formatted for use at the 2013 ELCA Churchwide Assembly. It is NOT an official statement of the ELCA until considered and acted upon by the August 2013 ELCA Churchwide Assembly.
