Following the action of the 2022 ELCA Churchwide Assembly (CA22.01.06), the ELCA Church Council authorized the establishment of the Commission for a Renewed Lutheran Church (CRLC) to consist of no more than 35 voting members and directed the Executive Committee of the Church Council to initiate the process of forming the commission at its November 2022 meeting (CC22.11.38).
The Executive Committee set to work on the parameters of such a commission utilizing, in part, previous practices to appoint social statement task forces. The committee held to the representational principles outlined in Chapter 5 (ELCA Constitution - 5.01.e., 5.01.F19., and 5.01.H21.). In addition, the Church Council acted to increase the representation of persons of color or whose primary language is other than English to at least 25% and to increase the goal for youth or young adults to 20%. Two nomination processes were used. One was through synod councils and/or synod executive committees and the other through an open nomination process where individuals could nominate someone else or self-nominate. Nominations were accepted from January 9–March 9, 2023.
Upon closure of the nomination process, all nominations were grouped together by region and Executive Committee members were paired up to prayerfully review the nominations. These reviews included phone calls and email conversations with the nominees, their listed references and other appropriate references.
At the Church Council retreat in March, the Executive Committee reviewed their selections — a total of three per region with two selected from the synod nominations, next to other selected nominations. The representational principles, along with varying levels of education; professional gifts, skills and experiences; church leadership experience; varying congregational and geographic settings; etc., guided the discernment to reach the final slate of recommended nominations. Additional phone calls, reference checks and substitutions due to schedule conflicts or representational needs were made in preparation for the April 20, 2023, Church Council meeting.
The final slate of CRLC nominees was presented for discussion and subsequent approval to the Church Council, and those appointed were notified immediately. Following the announcement to the appointees of the CRLC, the Executive Committee was notified of an appointee's unavailability to attend the first meeting. Attendance at the first meeting was an expectation of membership. The Church Council authorized the Executive Committee to fill vacancies as needed. With this vacancy, the Executive Committee appointed a new member. The first meeting of the CRLC will be July 13-15, 2023, at the Lutheran Center in Chicago.

Después de la acción de la Asamblea Nacional de la IELA 2022 (CA22.01.06), el Consejo de la iglesia de la IELA autorizó el establecimiento de la Comisión para una Iglesia Luterana Renovada (CRLC, por sus siglas en inglés), que debía constar de no más de 35 miembros votantes, y ordenó al Comité Ejecutivo del Consejo de la iglesia a iniciar el proceso de formar la comisión en su reunión de noviembre de 2022 (CC22.11.38).
El Comité Ejecutivo se puso a trabajar en los parámetros de dicha comisión, utilizando, en parte, prácticas anteriores en el nombramiento de grupos de trabajo de los pronunciamientos sociales. El comité se atuvo a los principios de representación descritos en el Capítulo 5 (Constitución de la IELA - 5.01.e., 5.01.F19., y 5.01.H21. Además, el Consejo de la iglesia actuó para aumentar la representación de personas de color o cuyo idioma principal no sea el inglés a por lo menos el 25% y para aumentar la meta de jóvenes o adultos jóvenes al 20%. Se usaron dos procesos de nominación. Uno fue a través de los consejos sinodales y/o los comités ejecutivos de los sínodos, y el otro fue mediante un proceso de nominación abierta, en el que las personas pueden nominar a otra o nominarse a sí mismas. Se aceptaron nominaciones del 9 de enero al 9 de marzo de 2023.
Al cierre del proceso de nominación, todas las nominaciones fueron agrupadas por región, y los miembros del Comité Ejecutivo se unieron en pares para revisar en oración las nominaciones. Estas revisiones incluyeron llamadas telefónicas y conversaciones por correo electrónico con los nominados, sus referencias presentadas y otras referencias apropiadas.
En el retiro del Consejo de la iglesia en marzo, el Comité Ejecutivo revisó sus selecciones —un total de tres por región, con dos seleccionados de las nominaciones de los sínodos, junto a otras nominaciones seleccionadas. Los principios de representación, junto con los diferentes niveles de educación; dones, habilidades y experiencias profesionales; experiencia en liderazgo de la iglesia; diferentes entornos congregacionales y geográficos; etc., guiaron el discernimiento para llegar a la lista final de nominaciones recomendadas. En preparación para la reunión del Consejo de la iglesia del 20 de abril de 2023, se realizaron llamadas telefónicas adicionales, verificaciones de referencias y sustituciones debido a conflictos de horarios o necesidades de representación.
Se presentó al Consejo de la iglesia la lista final de nominados a la CRLC para su discusión y posterior aprobación, y los nombrados fueron notificados de inmediato. Tras el anuncio de los nombrados a la CRLC, se notificó al Comité Ejecutivo que uno de los designados no estaría disponible para asistir a la primera reunión. Una expectativa de los miembros era su asistencia a la primera reunión. El Consejo de la iglesia autorizó al Comité Ejecutivo a llenar las vacantes según fuese necesario. Con esta vacante, el Comité Ejecutivo nombró a un nuevo miembro. La primera reunión de la CRLC será del 13 al 15 de julio de 2023 en el Centro Luterano de Chicago.
