Lutheran Campus Ministry Turns 90

LUTHERAN CAMPUS MINISTRY TURNS 90

Lutheran Campus Ministry, an Evangelical Lutheran Church in America ministry
for college and
university students celebrates 90 years of "reminding students of their
baptism" and extending an
"invitation to leadership for the church tomorrow."  Campus ministry began
in 1907 at the
University of Wisconsin, Madison, when the Rev. Howard Gold, Trinity
Lutheran Church (now Luther
Memorial Church), Madison, was first called to minister to Lutheran
students.  Today, on state and
private university campuses across the country, there are 144 campus pastors
and lay professionals
who minister on behalf of the ELCA.  "Lutheran Campus Ministry played a key
role in my own faith
development," said the Rev. H. George Anderson, presiding bishop for the

people at a critical time in their lives, and it often challenges them to
lifelong leadership in the
church," he said.  A Lutheran Campus Ministry anniversary and reunion will
take place Aug. 8-9 at
the Lutheran Campus Center, University of Wisconsin, Madison.  Special
guests include the Rev. A.
Henry Hetland, Park Ridge, Ill.  Known as "Pastor Hank," Hetland built the
Lutheran Student House in
Madison and became national director of campus ministry in 1968.  He retired
in the late 1970s. The
anniversary program includes worship, a banquet, panel discussions and focus
groups.   Lutheran
Campus Ministry will also celebrate its anniversary at the ELCA's Churchwide
Assembly in
Philadephia, Aug 13-20.  August 15 has been set aside as the day to give
thanks for Lutheran
Campus Ministy.
