Volunteer

Would you like to volunteer at the Gathering and help our young people grow in faith and encounter Christ? Serving the youth of this church is a vocational calling that requires careful discernment.

There are three volunteer categories: local volunteers, Gathering Volunteer Corps (GVC) and servant companions. Although responsibilities and commitments vary by category, every volunteer must agree to follow the terms of a volunteer code of conduct and submit to a background check by the ELCA.

There is no application fee this cycle, though applicants offered a volunteer role will have the opportunity to donate to cover the cost of their background check, flight, hotel or meals.

Gathering Volunteer Corps (GVCs)

The Gathering Volunteer Corps serves in multiple capacities throughout the Gathering. Duties might include ushering and assisting during mass gatherings, helping with Interactive Learning activities, directing foot traffic in the convention center, staffing the info booth or moving equipment in a Gathering facility. GVCs serve wherever Gathering planning teams have identified the need for additional help!

Eligibility: GVCs must be 19 years old, have been out of high school for one year by the time of the Gathering, and commit to being in Minneapolis for one week, likely arriving Sunday, June 27, and departing Saturday, July 3, 2021. The Gathering will provide GVC volunteers:

  • Per diem or catered meals while onsite in Minneapolis
  • Shared lodging accommodations
  • Mileage reimbursement or airfare travel to and from the Gathering

Applications for GVCs will be accepted beginning May 21, 2020, via links from this website.

Servant Companions

Young adult Servant Companions will accompany congregational groups as they encounter and serve the people of Minneapolis during their Service Learning day. Applicants should be comfortable leading a group, thinking on their feet and speaking about their faith. Servant companions will also help during some evening activities.

Eligibility: Servant Companions must be between 20 and 30 years old at the time of the Gathering, and commit to being in Minneapolis for one week, likely arriving Sunday, June 27, and departing Saturday, July 3, 2021.

The Gathering will provide servant companions:

  • Per diem or catered meals while onsite in Minneapolis
  • Shared lodging accommodations
  • Mileage reimbursement or airfare travel to and from the Gathering

Applications for Servant Companions will be accepted beginning November 21, 2020, via links from this website.

Local Volunteers

Local Volunteers serve in a wide variety of roles, and there are jobs for people of all ages and abilities. Scheduling for Local Volunteers often happens later in the cycle and requires flexibility. If you live in or around Minneapolis and want to be involved in the ministry of the Gathering but can’t commit to the full week of volunteering, sign up to be a Local Volunteer!

Eligibility: Local Volunteers must be at least 19 years old and out of high school for one year by the time of the Gathering.

The Gathering will provide Local Volunteers:

  • Meals while serving
  • Access to the evening mass gathering sessions and closing worship
