SHERMAN STAFFS INTERFAITH RELATIONS
The Rev. Franklin E. Sherman, 68, was appointed associate for
interfaith relations in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in
America's Department for Ecumenical Affairs. The department's
director, the Rev. Daniel F. Martensen, said the limited staff
position began Nov. 1 and will be reviewed in one year. It
involves "a few days a month to help coordinate the interfaith
work of the department." Sherman founded the Institute for
Christian-Jewish Understanding, Muhlenberg College, Allentown,
Pa., in 1989 and recently retired as its director. He will
continue to work from Allentown, providing staff support for the
Lutheran-Jewish Consultative Panel and the ELCA's involvement in
the Interfaith Commission of the National Council of Churches of
Christ in the U.S.A. Sherman earned degrees from Muhlenberg
College, the University of Chicago, the Lutheran School of
Theology at Chicago (LSTC) and Oxford University, Oxford,
England. He was ordained in 1956 and was pastor of Advent
Lutheran Church, Chicago. Sherman served on the faculties of the
University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa, and Mansfield College,
Oxford, England. For more than two decades he was a professor of
Christian ethics at LSTC, including 10 years as academic dean.
